Marketing & Public Relations Consultant
Matt Smith is a fractional CMO and marketing consultant.
From 2014-17 he served as the chief marketing officer for sweetFrog Enterprises with responsibility for marketing programs, brand management, and business development. Prior to joining sweetFrog, Smith’s professional career included work in marketing, event management, communications and public relations.
His career started in college sports marketing at the University of Richmond where he also helped run the media center for the 1992 Presidential Debate. Later he spent three years promoting the nation’s largest sports memorabilia conventions and coordinating appearances by professional athletes for Tuff Stuff Magazine.
In 2001, after spending four years in direct mail marketing, Smith was hired by Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance to start an in-house marketing department. Over the next 12 years his responsibilities would grow to include strategic partnerships and change management. While at Farm Bureau, Matt negotiated the naming rights for Farm Bureau Live at Virginia Beach and helped lead the acquisition of the State Fair of Virginia and Meadow Farm (the birthplace of Secretariat).
In 2013 he started his own marketing firm to help clients with branding, the creation of strategic marketing plans, engagement in social media and sponsorship negotiation/measurement. A native of Frederick, MD, Smith worked as a cameraman for Frederick Cablevision, a sportswriter for the Frederick News-Post and a sports correspondent for WFMD radio.
Matt holds a bachelors degree in political science from the University of Richmond. In his free time, Matt enjoys coaching his kid’s sports and is a member of the University of Richmond radio and TV broadcast teams for football and basketball.
